Jiepai Jianghu Language, Lexicon, Grammar, and Pragmatics Series: Native-Insider Documentation of Jiepai Speech, Jiangsu, China

This record is a series-level primary source archival record for the Jiepai Jianghu Language, Lexicon, Grammar, and Pragmatics Series, a group of Chinese language documentation, local lexicon, grammar, pragmatics, and spontaneous speech materials within the Jiepai Jianghu section of the Chuanyue Archive. It is curated for research use in language documentation, local Sinitic varieties, Jiangnan vernacular speech studies, Chinese dialectology, Sinitic linguistics, emic semantic documentation, native-speaker judgment, intergenerational dialect shift, and low-resource language documentation. It is released as the OA_V1 series-level record within the Chuanyue Archive. The series records Jiepai speech from the perspective of a native insider who grew up in rural Jiepai before full industrialization. The series-level text describes the Archive Author’s early speech environment: before kindergarten, the author primarily understood and spoke Jiepai speech, with some Huai’an speech influence from the author’s mother. In village kindergarten and primary school, teachers still often used Jiepai dialect in class; full Mandarin-only classroom exposure began later, while peer communication outside class remained in Jiepai speech. The record’s value lies in language documentation, local Sinitic varieties, Jiangnan vernacular speech, Chinese dialectology, local lexicon, vernacular grammar, pragmatics, emic semantic documentation, native-speaker judgment, and intergenerational dialect shift. The series is designed to preserve Jiepai speech and to help readers understand the Jiepai Jianghu corpus, where local words, grammatical forms, pragmatic patterns, and speech categories may not correspond directly to Standard Mandarin. A key feature of the series-level record is the Archive Author’s recognition that Jiepai speech and Standard Mandarin are not simple equivalents. Some concepts exist in Jiepai speech but not in Mandarin, while other concepts exist in Mandarin but not in Jiepai speech. Some objects also have entirely different names across the two speech systems. The example of “niusheng,” the Jiepai term for “mahua,” records one such lexical mismatch and reflects the author’s early realization that local naming systems are not universally understood. Methodologically, this series-level record is based on the Archive Author’s native-speaker experience, childhood speech environment, school-language memory, family-language background, later reflection while writing the Jiepai Jianghu corpus, author annotations, and provenance notes. The record explains why the series includes grammar notes, lexicon records, spontaneous speech annotation materials, and selected item-level records such as “Lili” and “Da Baizi.” The series currently includes or will include multiple expandable materials, including “Grammar Notes on Jiepai Speech, Danyang, Jiangsu,” “Lexicon Records of Jiepai Speech, Danyang, Jiangsu,” “Annotated Spontaneous Speech Materials from Jiepai, Danyang, Jiangsu,” “Lili,” and “Da Baizi.” Several of these materials are ongoing and will be supplemented, revised, and expanded over time. This public OA_V1 series-level release includes the public series text, author annotations, series-scope metadata, and contextual documentation. It does not include raw audio, private videos, full spontaneous speech recordings unless specifically released, precise speaker-identifying materials, unreleased annotation tables, private notes, raw provenance materials, or materials retained in the Author Private Master Archive. Item-level records in this series may have different access statuses, including open access, restricted access, or non-public private-master retention. Authorship and upload roles are separate.
