Supporting data for "Teaching English as a Subject in Hong Kong Secondary Schools (1970 - 1995): A Perspective on Colonial Language Planning"

Through an analysis of archival materials supplemented by interviews, this study aims to critically evaluate Hong Kong government initiatives in the field of secondary school English language education between 1970 and 1995 from a sociolinguistic perspective. It adopts a ‘thematic’ approach whereby significant developments (‘themes’) during the period are identified, charted and explained through a qualitative analysis of primary (archival) and secondary materials. <b>In addition, three interviews with teachers, panel chairpersons and/or members of Subject Committees are arranged to shed light upon each ‘theme’, especially with respect to the implementation of government policy in schools (NB the data include interview scripts, recordings and transcripts).</b> The focus is on the nature and implications of colonial language policy.
