Sapelo Island: Evolving Community Organization on the Georgia Coast

Community settlement-pattern analysis, focusing upon the spatial structure of material remains represented at a single archaeological site, provides a firm basis for re­ constructing a wide range of synchronic. and diachronic cultural phenomena. The potential of the approach for sociocultural explanation of the archaeological record is well documented. 1 The purpose of this paper is to present information concerning changes in the gross configura­ tion of community settlement patterns at Bourbon Field, a large archaeological site located near the middle of the Georgia coast, and to provide at least tentative expla­ nations of the changing configurations.以单一考古遗址所呈现的物质遗存空间结构为核心的聚落形态分析，可为重建一系列共时与历时的文化现象提供坚实基础。该方法针对考古记录开展社会文化阐释的潜力，已有充分文献佐证[1]。本文旨在介绍佐治亚海岸中部附近大型考古遗址波旁场（Bourbon Field）的聚落形态整体格局变化相关信息，并至少就该格局的演变提出尝试性阐释。
