The objective of this study was to elaborate an early-warning monitoring system for numerous lake sites to identify and quantify toxigenic cyanobacterial genotypes in the course of fulfilment of the requirements by BWD. In particular, we wanted to identify (i) bathing waters which have a potential for cyanobacterial proliferation, (ii) the dominant microcystin (MC)-producing cyanobacterial genera, and (iii) the environmental parameters related to cyanobacterial harmful algal bloom occurrence.
