Obesity-related gut microbiota aggravates inflammatory bone destruction through elevation of uric acid

Obesity is a risk factor for periodontitis. Initiation and progression of periodontitis modulated by complex interaction between dysbiosis of oral microbiota and host responses. Although obesity is associated with increased susceptibility to bacterial infection, the detailed mechanisms connecting obesity and susceptibility to periodontal disease remain elusive. By using fecal microbiota transplantation and ligature-induced periodontitis model, we demonstrate gut dysbiosis associated metabolite from high-fat diet (HFD)-fed mice worsens alveolar bone destruction. We demonstrated that obesity increase the risk of periodontitis by increasing production of metabolites mediated by gut dysbiosis.
