Emergence and polyclonal dissemination of NDM-5/OXA181 carbapenemase-producing Escherichia coli in the French Indian Ocean territories, 2015-2020

Since 2015, an increased prevalence of NDM-5 or OXA-181-producing Escherichia coli has been observed in Reunion and Mayotte. Whole genome sequencing identified two key findings. Firstly, a large diversity of sequence types (STs) were identified, with numerous intra-ST patient-to-patient transmission events. Secondly, three conserved plasmids were identified as common to different STs.
