VPRS 9470 Nominal Index Cards to General Correspondence Files

This series provided access to files by indexing individuals' and organisations' names from whom correspondence was received and filed in VPRS 6008 General Correspondence Files, Annual Single Number Systems for the period October 1958 to about May 1987.Used in conjunction with VPRS 9468 Keyword Index Cards to General Correspondence Files, this series provided the State Rivers and Water Supply Commission and the Rural Water Commission with a convenient way of retrieving correspondence files. It was quicker to find the number by scanning the subject and nominal indexes, which were each arranged in lexicographical sequences, than by searching the classified registration cards, which were arranged hierarchically. For the period 1958 to 1987 the classified registration cards were VPRS 9472 Classified Registration Cards for General Correspondence Files. Using the classified registration cards would have been thorough but slow and tedious.
