ECODIP — Database of Selected Diplomatic Instruments of European Post-Socialist States

This dataset provides original, manually collected data on selected diplomatic instruments of European post-socialist states, compiled from official public sources (government, presidential and ministry-of-foreign-affairs records). It covers three instruments: presidential foreign trips, ministry-of-foreign-affairs (MFA) interactions, and the presence of resident embassies. Coverage is subject to data availability and therefore uneven across these instruments. The origin countries included and the years spanned differ from one instrument to another. Across the whole database, 14 origin countries appear — the Visegrád Four (Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia), post-Soviet states (Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine), and Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia. The longest series, resident-embassy presence, spans 1989–2025; the other instruments cover shorter, varying windows within this range. The data were compiled from official public sources (government, presidential and ministry-of-foreign-affairs records, embassy webpages), complemented by publicly available archival and reference sources and news reports. The Excel workbook contains six data sheets, a codebook sheet documenting every variable, and an info sheet. An accompanying Stata do-file builds the analytical Country × Year panel from the raw workbook. The data contain only the project's own original records; no third-party licensed data are included. The dataset was produced within the ECODIP project (The Impact of Global Crises on Economic Diplomacy in European Post-Socialist States) at the Department of Regional Geography and Regional Development, Comenius University Bratislava.
