Cellulose nanofibril-based flame retardant was developed by phosphorylation of cellulose nanofibrils by ball milling with P2O5 followed by ionic binding of melamine. The effect of varied DSphos of phosphorylated cellulose nanofibril on flame retardancy was studied, the result showed that the heat release rate of phosphorylated cellulose nanofibrils was reduced with increasing DSphos. The peak heat release rate of phosphorylated cellulose nanofibril with DSphos of 0.160 was reduced 81% compared with control paper. The flame retardancy of cellulose nanofibril-based flame retardant was further enhanced, the peak heat release rate was reduced to 89%.
