On September-October 1999, in the framework of the APE-GAIA 1999 campaign, the
stratospheric research aircraft M55 Geophysica flew from Ushuaia, Tierra del
Fuego (54 48' S, 68 19' W) to perform stratospheric particle of gases
measurements toward the south pole.
The 532 nm backscattersonde MAS were part of the scientific payload of the
airplane. MAS is a backscattersonde, thus performing an in-situ measurement of
the optical properties of the airmass, namely Backscatter Ratio and
Depolarization Ratio.
