Bibliographic details of any catalogue essays, articles or reviews that write about the quality of the Creative Work. RESEARCH BACKGROUND: Phoebe Whitman was one of nine artists invited to participate in THISNESS; a group exhibition that explored the idea of 'haecceity' (Latin for thisness) and the virtues of the work through the material and immaterial. The exhibition attempted to experiment with the audience's relationship to interior and challenge the perception of the material world. The exhibition as a collective attempted to highlight a multiplicity of approaches toward the practice of spatial art and design through the manipulation and abstraction of our physical environment. RESEARCH CONTRIBUTION: SE#001 is a site specific piece. It involves three pieces that sit alongside each other that attempt to bring attentiveness to the interior of the gallery and surrounding environment. The work examines the production and emergence of encounter through the proliferation of surface. Surface encounters take place through an engagement by the visitor with events and occurrences that transpire on, in, through and across surface. These three elements produce a series of changing spatial scenarios in site. Through techniques of selection, framing and arrangement the material gestures are located in site in order to capture and activate an encounter with the material surface. The works intended to bring forth existing conditions in site that were temporal and ephemeral. This work is part of ongoing research and experimentation into the production of surface encounters. RESEARCH SIGNIFICANCE: BUS Projects is a prestigous Artist Run Initiative, funded by the Victorian State Government, through Arts Victoria. Exhibition proposal are selected by an independent curatorial board headed by Nella Themelios and Drew Pettifer. A catalogue documenting and contextualising the works in the exhibition was also produced.
