China is the country with the largest number of operational gas pipelines worldwide. As of February 2024, the Chinese gas network was made up of 442 functional pipelines – comprising different segments – with a further 302 segments either proposed or already under construction. The total number of operational gas pipelines worldwide is above 1,500.Pipeline transportation is used to move gaseous or liquid products from their production or extraction site to refineries and ultimately end consumers. Pipelines used for the transportation of pressurized natural gas are made from carbon steel.
