本数据集旨在通过与现有影像比对生成经质量保障的火灾范围成果。自2000年以来，数据源自新南威尔士州乡村消防局（RFS）内部系统，包括ICON、BRIMS与GUARDIAN，上述系统的数据汇入内部编辑与制作的火灾历史数据集。本公开可用的“新南威尔士州火灾历史”数据集严格遵循《AFAC火灾历史指南》及《火灾历史数据字典》（afac.com.au）发布。该数据集还被纳入《国家历史山火边界 | 澳大利亚数字地图集》（National Historical Bushfire Boundaries | Digital Atlas of Australia）。

数据源自新南威尔士州各级地方与州政府机构开展的山火及减灾烧除测绘工作。2006年起，山火数据源自新南威尔士州乡村消防局（RFS）的ICON系统；减灾烧除数据此前源自BRIMS系统，2018年起改用GUARDIAN系统。2006年之前的数据则源自山火管理委员会成员单位、流域管理局、土地厅、新南威尔士州消防救援局、新南威尔士州森林公司、新南威尔士州国家公园与野生动物服务局、澳大利亚公园管理局、乡村消防局及州应急服务局。
