As part of a project the aim of which was to identify the enzymes responsible for degradation of synthetic ethers, we isolated a fast-growing Mycobacterium strain from a heavily polluted groundwater sample from the industrial site of a pharmaceutical factory located in Budapest, Hungary. Mycobacterium sp. CH28 can utilise DIPE and ETBE but not MTBE, TAME or TBA as a sole carbon source. To reveal the genetic background of the synthetic ether degradation we sequenced the genome of CH28. Several oxygenases were identified that may play a role in DIPE and ETBE degradation.
