Linguistic Hospitality Approaches in Catalan and Irish School Settings: School Observations Dataset

This dataset contains anonymised observation data collected during the research project, including observation annotations and NVivo framework matrices used during qualitative analysis. Observation annotations are provided as Microsoft Word documents, with one document corresponding to each participating school (e.g. "S01.docx"). All identifying information has been removed or anonymised. A supplementary CSV document containing participant school characteristics is also included to contextualise each observation file. This document provides information on: school location (rural/urban), language of instruction (Catalan, English, or Gaeilge) and educational level (primary/secondary). The framework matrices were exported from NVivo in Microsoft Excel format. Two types of framework matrices are included: Initial thematic framework matrices:Three overarching matrices were created to organise the data according to the study’s main analytical areas: linguistic landscapes, linguistic soundscapes, and linguistic hospitality practices. These matrices incorporate all themes relevant to each analytical area across all research sites. Files containing “overview” in the title correspond to these initial matrices (e.g. “Landscapes_overview.xlsx”). Grouped comparative framework matrices Following preliminary analysis, emerging patterns suggested that differences in linguistic hospitality practices were associated with the language of instruction in each school setting (Catalan, Gaeilge, and English). Additional grouped framework matrices were therefore created to facilitate comparison across these categories. For the analysis of linguistic landscapes and linguistic soundscapes, further grouped matrices were developed to explore differences and similarities between Irish-medium, English-medium schools and Catalan-medium schools. Files containing “medium” in the title correspond to these grouped comparative matrices (e.g. "Soundscapes_medium.xlsx").
