NH4+-N release from sediments could be effectively reduced by biochar coverage via its high adsorption capacity. NO3--N was also the main component of N species released from sediments, but showed a low affinity for biochar. The feasibility of biochar coverage to abate NO3--N release needs to be evaluated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of biochar coverage on reducing N release from sediments, especially NO3--N, and elucidate the mechanisms of how biochar coverage affected denitrification and anammox process.
