2015 subsurface metagenome from Beatrix Gold Mine borehole BE326-BH2. subsurface metagenome

The South African borehole of interest is at a depth of 1.34 km (BE326-BH2). This sub-horizontal borehole penetrates 57 meters into a medium to coarse-grained sub-lithic arenite to intersect a NNW striking fault zone where it encountered high-pressure water with a flow rate of 750 L min-1. Since it was first drilled in 2007, it has been sealed off with a high pressure steel valve. The brackish, alkaline paleometeoric water and microbial communities collected from this borehole were first characterized in 2011. PIs Rachel L. Harris, Maggie C. Y. Lau, and Tullis C. Onstott.
