VPRS 12142 Miscellaneous Licenses Register

One of the key responsibilities of the License Branch of the Department of the Treasurer was to issue license forms to Licensing Courts established throughout Victoria. The various types of license forms were then authorised and issued to successful applicants at court.The licenses detailed in this series were categorised as Miscellaneous, that is, not being categorised under the title of 238A or 238B for which many other license types were. As at September 1999 the significance of these categorisations is not apparent. The following license types are brought together under the Miscellaneous title, and mainly relate to various types of merchants:Cutter and CarterJinker (Red Gum)Surface Stone and SandShells / SeaweedStone (for various localities)DepasturingGarden RenewalsGravelMarine Stores & Old Metals Act Dealers and CollectorsFactory RegistrationAfter 1957, licenses for Business Agents and Hawkers, and Miners Rights hitherto the domain of 238B Licenses, becomes classified under the Miscellaneous title.This series was maintained by the License Branch, Department of the Treasurer, as a record of the number of license forms received from the Government Printers Office, and subsequently distributed to Licensing Courts throughout Victoria. Entries were made on a bimonthly basis, with two pages allocated for each bimonthly time period. On the first page the amount of each type of license received by the License branch from the Government printer was listed. A total balance of license forms in the custody of the Branch was also entered. On the second page the total number of license forms forwarded to each Licensing Court was entered, as well as totals forwarded for each license type.VPRS 12140 238A Licenses Register and VPRS 12141 238B Licenses Register contains similar details for other categories of license from 1919 to 1962 and 1908 to 1966 respectively.
