In this study, Kluyveromyces marxianus, a natural producer of 2-PE, was submitted to adaptive laboratory evolution to select 2-PE tolerant strains. Adaptation experiments proceeded for ~150 generations. The stepwise addition of 2-PE, reaching 4.0 g L -1 in the final concentration, resulted in tolerant cells.
