The analysis on the performance of a longitudinally rough plane slider bearing under the presence ofmagnetic fluid is presented. The magnetic field is oblique to the stator and the bearing surfaces are assumed to belongitudinally rough. The roughness of the bearing surfaces is characterized by a stochastically random variablewith non-zero mean, variance and skewness. The concerned Reynolds equation is averaged with respect to therandom roughness parameters. This equation is solved with appropriate boundary conditions to obtain the expressionfor pressure distribution which is further used to calculate the load carrying capacity. The results are presentedgraphically. It is seen that the load carrying capacity increases due to the magnetic fluid lubricant. It is also observedthat the roughness affects the bearing performance adversely. The study reveals that the negative effect of roughnesscan be minimized by the positive effect of magnetization.
