About the Data

These data are used in the Vermont Infectious Diseases Data Explorer.

The Vermont Infectious Diseases Data Explorer displays confirmed and probable cases of infectious diseases reported to the Vermont Department of Health. Learn more about disease reporting requirements in Vermont.

You can explore data by year, season, county, age, reported sex, and race and ethnicity.

The Vermont Department of Health recognizes that social, economic, and environmental inequities influence health outcomes and are reflected in these data. The Department continues to improve data collection and reporting practices to better represent the experiences of all Vermonters.

Demographic Information

Healthcare providers, laboratories, and other reporting entities submit demographic information to the Health Department. The accuracy and completeness of demographic data depend on how reporting entities collect and report information.

Race and ethnicity are grouped into two categories:

Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC): People who identify as Hispanic or Latino, identify with more than one race, or identify with any race other than white.

White Non-Hispanic (WnH): People who identify as white and do not identify as Hispanic or Latino.

Reported sex reflects information submitted to the Health Department and may vary based on reporting practices.

Rates and Comparisons

The Health Department calculates rates using Vermont population estimates. Annual rates use population estimates for the corresponding year, while multi-year rates use the combined population across the selected time period.

We compare county rates with the statewide rate using standard statistical methods to determine whether county rates are significantly higher, lower, or not different from the state rate.

To protect privacy, we do not display data when fewer than six cases occur within a subgroup. We do not calculate rates for "Unknown" or "Other" demographic categories because population estimates are unavailable.

Data Limitations

Reporting entities often do not document how they collect demographic information. As a result, data quality and completeness may vary across diseases, locations, and time periods.

Interpret race and ethnicity data with caution. Many records contain missing, unknown, or other race and ethnicity values, which may affect the accuracy of demographic analyses and limit our ability to identify disparities.

We exclude cases with demographic information reported as "Unknown" or "Other" from demographic analyses. Therefore, demographic totals may not match overall case counts shown elsewhere in the dashboard.

Additional Notes

Please consider the following when interpreting the data:

COVID-19 cases are not included in this dashboard.
