Genetic diversity and structure of red-handed howler monkeys (Alouatta, Atelidae, Primates)

Considering that A. belzebul and A. discolor are currently recognized as distinct taxa that inhabit opposite banks of the Xingu River, here we focus on studying Alouatta specimens rescued in the Belo Monte Hydroelectric Plant (UHBM) inundation area, in the Volta Grande of the Xingu River, in order to investigate their taxonomic status and infer about their genetic diversity. In addition to contributions on diversification within Alouatta, our results shed light on the genetic diversity represented in the rescued individuals, establishing the baseline for monitoring the remaining populations after the forest flooding, and for the conservation of Amazonian howler monkeys.
