Dores Boar (National Museum of Scotland)

This fragment of a carved stone was found at Clune at Dores in Inverness-shire. It dates from between 500 and 800. The stone was carved with a finely-designed boar symbol which was perhaps the only symbol on the stone. The original Pictish fragment was roughly triangular, the shape due to its reuse as a chimney-head in a cottage. It contained only the central part of the body, two forelegs and one hind leg, The complete carving on display today comprises a large area of clay modelling upon which the lines of the fragment have been extended and interpreted to illustrate how the full original caving might have looked.
