The Chicken leg Tax

This paper introduces the concept of the Chicken-Leg Tax, a term describing the hidden emotional, cognitive, and behavioral labor that many Black women perform before accessing ordinary public resources and services. While activities such as purchasing groceries, seeking housing assistance, utilizing food pantries, attending medical appointments, or navigating public spaces appear routine, they often require extensive preparation aimed at managing stereotypes, reducing perceived threat, avoiding conflict, and anticipating discriminatory treatment. Drawing upon scholarship related to misogynoir, racial vigilance, emotional labor, stereotype management, racial battle fatigue, and weathering, this paper argues that these demands function as an invisible social tax imposed upon Black women. Unlike financial costs, this burden is rarely acknowledged by institutions despite consuming time, energy, attention, and psychological resources. The paper further argues that responsibility for addressing these inequities should shift from individual adaptation toward institutional accountability through improved reporting systems, anti-retaliation policies, staff training, and bias-aware public service practices.
