ID: EOA:2022.90.3 Collection: Earl of Abergavenny Classification: Remains Measurements: Length 720mm Width 250mm Date made: as yet unknown Display: not on display Manufacturer/Creator: as yet unknown Credit: Portland Museum Trust Salted pork was a staple food for the sailors below decks on the Abergavenny along with salt beef and ships biscuits, often of unappetising quality. Salting helped to preserve the meat for longer, needed on the long voyages. Live pigs were also carried to supply fresh meat for the captain's table and his passengers.
