Isolation and genomic characterization of the bacteriodes species found in severely abscessed livers from beef cattle

Using a culturomic approach, 12 microbes identified as belonging to the genus bacteriodes were isolated from the purulent material of A+ liver abscesses collected postmortem from mixed breed cattle raised in a feedlot in Southern Alberta. Whole genome sequencing using both short and long reads was used to generate genome assemblies. These data enabled us to identify the species of bacteroides that were present and provides insight into the microbial mechanisms underlying liver abscess pathogenesis.
