Soil erosion control is a critical ecosystem service provided by terrestrial ecosystems primarily through vegetation cover. Two indicators are used to quantify the capacity and utilization of this service. The first dimensionless indicator measures the ability of ecosystems to prevent soil and water loss by scaling pixel values to a range of 0 to 1, covering the territory of the EU-28 with data from the year 2010. The second indicator is the difference between soil erosion in vegetated areas and that in unvegetated areas, based on the amount of soil retained by vegetation. The quantification is based on the application of the RUSLE model.
