Avena sativa, commercial oat, is a hexaploid (2n = 6x = 42) oat species with a genome of about 11000 Mbp. The genome consists of three basic subgenomes, A, C, and D each of which contains seven pairs of chromosomes. The A and D subgenomes are highly related while the C subgenome is more distant. Following the precedent with Triticum aestivum, developing a genetic map for the polyploid includes developing genetic maps for each of the component genomes.The diploid members of Avena have been studied to i) learn about the component genomes of Avena sativa and ii) ascertain the availability of specific pathogen resistance which might be introduced into the commercial oat germplasm.
