Qualitative interview data. The sample profile for this study was predominately veterans ages 35 to 64. The branches of the military the veterans served in were Army (6), Air Force (5), Navy (3), and Marines (1). The sample size, N=15, consisted of (13) veterans that have or are undergoing gender reassignment from male to female (MTF). Not all the MTF participants had received gender reassignment surgery. Two of the research participants were transitioning their gender from female to male (FTM) and neither had yet undergone gender reassignment surgery. Ten of the participants were employed, (3) were retired, and (2) were unemployed. The level of education varied within the group from no college to doctorate degree.
Audio recordings totaling sixteen hours and thirty-seven minutes provided (295) pages of transcript data for initial coding (see Table 4). Interview duration averaged one hour and six minutes and the average transcript document was 19.67 pages. The longest recorded interview was one hour and thirty-three minutes, and the shortest interview lasted forty-seven minutes and fifty-four seconds.
