From an enrichment culture established from biofilm grown in-situ at an analogue site for an ILW-GDF biofilm was grown on steel discs at pH 11. The study looked at the ability of microbes grown under ILW-GDF conditions to form biofilm and possess the ability to reduce sulphate at pH 11 thus causing the corrosion of the steel discs.
