The mutant wsl1 was identified from a spontaneous mutant derived from Changnong 35, a foxtail millet cultivar. The wsl1 seedlings exhibited an albino phenotype with severely decreased chlorophyll contents at L20/D18 temperature conditions, normal green leaves similar to WT (Changnong 35) with only slightly reduced chlorophyll content at L30/D28 temperature conditions. Consistent with phenotype, the wsl1 mutant shows defective chloroplast development at low temperature L20/D18.To investigate why phenotypic variation and chloroplast development in the wsl1 depended on temperature, we carried out differential gene expression analysis by RNA-seq in WT, wsl1 and OE (overexpression SiWSL1 into the wsl1 mutant) plants grown in illuminating incubator at L20/D18 and L30/D28, respectively.
