Global Water Microbiome Consortium (GWMC) conducted a global-scale investigation of microbiome in activated sludge since 2014, to understand biodiversity, biogeography, and underlying mechanisms of microbial communities in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) around the world. The activated sludge samples were collected from more than 260 WWTPs in 23 countries on 6 continents in 2014 and 2015.
