Effects on Yarrowia lipolytica of short and long term exposure to industrially relevant oxygen oscillations

A continuous culture of Yarrowia lipolytica was brought to steady state at a dissolved oxygen concentration of 40%. Then an oscillating profile was started by the subsequent sparking with oxygen and nitrogen. Consequently, cells experienced alternating aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Over the course of the first oscillation, the bioreactor was sampled frequently to elucidate the short term dynamics. Then the profile continued for 10 hours and the bioreactor was sampled again during an aerobic and anaerobic phase. These time-points were used to investigate potential long term adaptations.
