Public Health Expenditure and the Quality of Health Care in Nigeria.

The study examined the effects of public expenditure on the quality of healthcare in Nigeria from 2000 to 2018. The least square multiple regression analysis was used to examine the effects of domestic government health expenditure and external health expenditure on the quality of healthcare in Nigeria. The study used secondary data from the world development indicators and world governance indicators of 2018. Various diagnostic tests were carried out to ensure the model was fit for interpretation. The variables used were life expectancy as a proxy for quality of healthcare services, domestic government health expenditure, external health expenditure, government effectiveness, inflation rate, exchange rate, literacy rate and population growth. The findings showed that there was a positive relationship between domestic government health expenditure and life expectancy, and a positive relationship between external health expenditure and life expectancy Nigeria. There were positive relationships between literacy rate and life expectancy, and population growth and life expectancy. The findings also showed that government health expenditure and external health expenditure positively affected the quality of healthcare. It was recommended that government should increase support, and allocate more funds to the health sector to ensure that the quality of healthcare services is improved over time.
