Gene database of Sulfolobus acidocaldarius DSM 639

<i>Sulfolobus acidocaldarius</i> is a thermophilic archaeon that thrives under acidic environment. Able to oxidize sulphur, the archaeon could grow at temperatures of 55-85 ^oC, with optimal growth at 70-75 ^oC. Potential to grow at thermophilic and acidic environments opens up the microorganism possible use in bioleaching, where microbes secretes metabolites that could help leach useful metals from ores or electronic scrap material. This work sought to provide fundamental information of the genetic repertoire of <i>Sulfolobus acidocaldarius</i> DSM 639 by parsing its annotated genome sequence downloaded from Genbank. Comprising gene name, gene function and gene sequence, the resource should be useful for understanding the metabolic machinery that helps endow <i>S. acidocaldarius</i> the ability to secrete metabolites for use in bioleaching. Additionally, gene sequence information available should also help guide molecular cloning work to heterologously express genes useful in bioleaching in mesophilic hosts such as <i>Escherichia coli</i>.
