Ecological connections between habitat areas of otters. A map with distinguishing potential habitats and migratory routes and a map with all bottlenecks, categorized by priority. A traffic bottleneck occurs when there is a reasonable chance of traffic casualties at a location within or between current habitats (Kuiters & Lammertsma, 2014). When assessing the urgency of a traffic bottleneck, the following considerations have been taken into account: 1. The suitability of the watercourse and riparian zone as a migration route for the otter. 2. The type of road (municipal, provincial or state road). 3. The maximum speed on the road in question (from 60 km/h fatal). 4. The presence of an underpass and its size and type. 5. The presence of obstacles in the underpass. 6.The presence of accompanying grids along the road. The map of the Netherlands Nature Network (NNN) looked at the extent to which the potential habitats and migration routes correspond to the ecological connection that has/will be realized.
