Jacob Schwartz

Jacob SchwartzDentist and bookseller. Born in Brooklyn, Schwartz studied to be a dentist. After a short time in the profession he turned to the rare book and manuscript business. One of the first to recognize the market potential for letters and manuscripts of Modernist writers, by 1929 he began buying JJ's books and, when available, letters. By 1930 he had founded the Ulysses Bookshop in London and published limited editions of JJ's James Clarence Mangan and Ibsen's New Drama. Schwartz's transactions formed the basis for several American JJ collections, most notably the T. E. Hanley collection which went to the Ransom Center at the University of Texas in 1958. Both Gorman and Ellmann relied upon Schwartz for their biographies of JJ. William Brockman
