List of map exhibitions in contemporary art

This list brings together exhibitions identified by Ruth Watson in two publications:

Mapping and Contemporary Art (The Cartographic Journal, 2009)
The Routledge Handbook of Mapping and Cartography (2018)

To this original selection, I have added a number of more recent exhibitions.

All exhibitions included here relate to contemporary art practices that engage with maps or mapping in some way. Shows focused purely on historical cartography have been excluded. The list is primarily centred on Western art institutions and should not be considered exhaustive.

One of its aims is to show how regularly exhibitions dealing with map-based art have been organised since the 1970s. Each entry includes the exhibition title, year, venue, and (where available) curator. This information can be used to trace specific artists, follow curatorial trends, or locate exhibition catalogues.
