Male Heliconius butterflies produce wing and genital pheromones that serve respectively as aphrodesiac and anti-aphrodesiac pheromones used during courtship to entice females into mating or to prevent re-mating by females. This study uses a combination of quantitative phenotyping of wing and genital pheromones and quantitative trait locus mapping to ascertain the genetic basis of these pheromones in crosses between Heliconius melpomene and H. cydno.
