To collect this data, an Internet-wide IP address sweep was conducted. Every IP address in the ranges allocated by IANA was pinged once by sending ICMP ECHO_REQUEST (PING) packet. If the response (ICMP_ECHO_REPLY) came, its IP address was recorded in this data-set. In all, over 2.5 billion distinct IP addresses were probed during this experiment.为采集本数据集，研究人员开展了一次全互联网范围的IP地址扫描行动。针对互联网编号分配机构（Internet Assigned Numbers Authority，IANA）分配的全部IP地址段内的每一个IP地址，均通过发送ICMP ECHO_REQUEST（PING）数据包完成一次ping探测。若收到对应的ICMP_ECHO_REPLY响应数据包，则将该IP地址记录至本数据集。本次实验中共探测了超过25亿个不同的IP地址。
