The marine clam Lutraria rhynchaena is gaining popularity as an aquaculture species in Asia, including Vietnam. Lutraria populations are present in the wild throughout Vietnam and several stocks have been established and translocated for breeding and aquaculture grow-out purposes. Next-generation sequencing was used to develop and characterize microsatellite for the study of populations and commercial stocks of Lutraria rhynchaena from northern and southern Vietnam. Based on an initial partial genome scan using the MiSeq sequencing platform from a L. rhynchaena clam isolated from Van Dong, a pool of microsatellite markers suitable for multiplexing were initially identified and characterized. The ten most suitable polymorphic loci were then genotypes using individuals from Van Dong Province North Vietnam.
