Bovine mastitis caused by Escherichia coli is a problem of major concern in the dairy industry. This well-known model bacterium has been described either as commensal or pathogenic depending on the strain and environment considered. In the present study we have considered three strains isolated in cases of clinical acute mastitis which may constitute a strong corpus for comparative genomics studies. A fourth pathogenic strain isolated in a bovine host has been added to the sample.
