Sudden acquired retinal degeneration syndrome (SARDS) is diagnosed primarily in middle-aged, female dogs and most dogs exhibit concomitant systemic abnormalities including polyphagia. As a key stimulator of appetite and food intake, the hormone ghrelin may play a role in the polyphagia seen in dogs with SARDS. The aim of this study was to determine ghrelin concentrations in the plasma of dogs diagnosed with SARDS compared to healthy controls and the relationship to age and sex.
