VPRS 14496 Health Register

This series consists of Food Premises and General Health Registers compiled as a result of the council's duties regarding the safe guarding of public health within the municipality of Moorabbin (VA 656).Under the Health Act 1958 (Act No. 6270), Municipal Councils were to employ inspectors and medical officers in order to remain informed of the public health and sanitary circumstances of the municipal district. Part of the Councils' duties were to ensure that inspectors monthly, annual and special reports were lodged with the Department of Health (VA 695), and to compile annual reports of the Councils' actions relating to public health and sanitary concerns within the municipal district.Every boarding house, common lodging house, apartment house, camp or camping area, eating house and food promises were required to be registered with the council under Sections 209 - 227 of the Health Act 1958. Regulations concerning the inspection, drainage, sanitary and other health related aspects were made by the Governor-in-Council. Premises were inspected by the municipal council for their concurrence with the regulations.Information recorded in the registers included the date of application, the name and address of the proprietor, whether the premises was owned or occupied or both, the details regarding the purpose for which the premises was used, the number of persons employed, the situation of the premises, the date of registration, whether there were any conditions imposed on the granting of registration, the date of transfer and to whom it was transferred to, and the details regarding the premises to which the registration was transferred.
