The present invention relates to a lettuce plant that is resistant to downy mildew， more specifically to a lettuce plant that comprises a mutated gene that confers broad spectrum resistance to Bremia lactucae in lettuce. Furthermore the present invention relates a resistance gene and a method for obtaining a lettuce plant that is resistant to downy mildew， wherein the method comprises the step of mutating a gene. Specifically， the present invention relates to lettuce plants being resistant to downy mildew， wherein the plant comprises one or more mutations in a SL7 gene， wherein said SL7 gene encodes for a protein sequence of SEQ ID No. 2 or having at least 90% sequence identity with SEQ ID No. 2.
