资源简介:
This series comprises photographs, negatives, slides and microfilm from the State Dockyard Newcastle (SDN).The images capture a range of activities at the SDN including shipbuilding, ships under repair, launches of newly built ships and other events such as Apprenticeship Week. There are images of SDN heavy engineering machinery, slipways, floating docks, and workshops, as well as aerial images of SDN dockyards and buildings. Sometimes, the images feature SDN employees and visitors, such as royal dignitaries including Queen Elizabeth II.There are also images of ships in various locations including the MS Princess of Tasmania in dock, ships being tested in Newcastle Harbour and surrounds, and images of military vessels at sea and in port including those from the Royal Australian Navy and US Navy. The series includes designs and plans of the interior and exterior of ships and images of major ports and harbours in NSW e.g. Sydney Harbour. The images were taken in black and white and colour. They were of varying sizes and at times were used for promotional purposes by SDN.Six shot books index the photographs of the series. They record the number of the photographic image (with the prefix D), the title, and date of the image (if known). There are 2 indexes for negatives from Walsh Island (the site of the former Government Dockyard). They record a DRWG (drawing) no., negative no., a title and the date copied. There is also a Walsh Island Drawing Index. Three of these volumes record the Walsh Island Number, title, drawing at state dock and remarks. One volume is arranged alphabetically by name of vessel.Numerous image titles include a number, which corresponds to a particular ship. Each ship was designated a number by SDN. Several images are unidentified and undated.Consignments 2 to 5 have been digitised. Consignment 1 is in physical format.
