Replication package for "Votes Before Turbines: Green Backlash and the Radical Right in France"

This deposit contains the replication package for the article "Votes Before Turbines: Green Backlash and the Radical Right in France" by Georges Ali Benyahia (Université de Pau et des Pays de l'Adour; Africa Business School, Mohammed VI Polytechnic University). The article links the national register of onshore wind projects to the results of ten national elections held between 2002 and 2024 in some 35,800 municipalities of metropolitan France. It shows that wind parks were sited in municipalities where the Rassemblement National vote was already higher and rising before any recorded application, and that national comparisons largely capture these pre-existing differences. The package reproduces every table and figure of the paper and of its supplementary material, together with the facts reported in the text, from analysis-ready extracts of public sources. A single command (bash run_all.sh) runs the full pipeline and writes all outputs to 04_results/: JSON files with every estimate, the figures, the LaTeX bodies of the generated tables and one log per run. The code requires Python 3.11 or later; with Python 3.13 and the package versions listed in requirements.txt, the outputs reproduce exactly the numbers reported in the paper. A complete run takes about one hour on a two-core machine with 8 GB of memory. Contents of Replication_package.zip: 01_data_analysis_ready/: the twelve input files of the analysis (wind register extracts at park and turbine level, municipality-by-election panels, polling-station results of the national first rounds from 1999 to 2024, geolocated polling stations, municipality-to-canton correspondences of 2015 and 2021, 2011 census controls); 02_data_rebuild_inputs/: the INSEE file from which the 2011 census controls are rebuilt; 03_code/: the analysis scripts (siting equation, procedural decomposition, event studies, identification checks, figures and tables) and the rebuild of the census controls; 04_results/: the outputs of run_all.sh as produced for the submitted version; run_all.sh, requirements.txt, MANIFEST.txt (SHA-256 checksum of every file) and LICENSE.txt. README.md documents the package, maps each script to the tables and figures of the paper, and describes the analysis-ready files and their sources. All primary data are public: the onshore wind register (Géorisques, Ministère de la Transition écologique and BRGM, extracted in June 2026), the harmonised election results by polling station and municipality (Ministère de l'Intérieur), the polling-station table of the national electoral register (INSEE), the geocoded file of polling stations, the INSEE census bases and the national registry of electricity production and storage installations (ODRÉ).
