Global Mangrove Watch: Country Boundaries

These are the country boundaries which are used by the Global Mangrove Watch (GMW) for calculating mangrove statistics. The country boundaries were primarily extracted from Open Street Map but then edited to meet the needs of the GMW. The GMW reports both countries and territories. For example, European overseas territories are reported individually rather than as the overseas territory. Mangroves are tricky as they straddle the coastal boundary and therefore a coastal buffer is included to ensure that all mangrove regions are captured. We have identified disputed regions (e.g., the Hala'ib Triangle) as separate regions, and therefore, the end user can allocate these areas to the country or territory as a post-processing step. To reproduce the GMW allocation for statistics, you need the attribute 'gmw_allocation'. If any errors are identified within this layer please let us know and we will do our best to resolve them and provide an updated version.
