Research data for: Urban Resilience of Ganja/Elizavetpol: Environment, Economy, and Multiethnicity from the Middle Ages to the Early Twentieth Century

This dataset accompanies the article “Urban Resilience of Ganja/Elizavetpol: Environment, Economy, and Multiethnicity from the Middle Ages to the Early Twentieth Century” (Historia i Świat). It contains: (1) the complete list of archival, statistical, primary, and secondary sources used in the study; (2) two chronological tables compiled by the authors, synthesising the demographic evidence on the population size and the ethnic and confessional composition of Ganja/Elizavetpol between 1804 and 1926. The tables are based on published imperial statistics and travellers’ accounts, including the Caucasian Calendars (1849–1917), the statistical survey of 1836 (Obozrenie), the First General Census of the Russian Empire of 1897, the Pamyatnye knigi of Elizavetpol Province (1910, 1914), the Brockhaus–Efron Encyclopaedic Dictionary (1894), and the accounts of E. Smith and H. G. O. Dwight (1834), F. Dubois de Montpéreux (1840), and F. R. Chesney (1850).
