Through a multi-institutional collaboration, we used Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing, and free bioinformatic platforms to run a joint research-education program where students sequenced and assembled bacterial genomes using the MinION platform in the classroom, with researchers providing Illumina data. These data were used to generate hybrid genome assemblies, and teach using placed-based science education principals.
